My Humanity Project - Finding Light in the Darkness: A Narrative of Friendship and Growth Through Shared Experiences with the Kupang Deaf Community"
My personal trajectory has been characterized by periods of both growth and adversity. The experience of a quarter-life crisis was particularly arduous. The accompanying psychological distress, manifested in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and loneliness, led to a profound sense of existential uncertainty. These emotional challenges culminated in significant social withdrawal and a retreat into isolation.

Amidst these bleak circumstances, a glimmer of hope emerged upon encountering the Kupang Deaf Community. Within this community, I discovered a warm and accepting friendship from individuals who truly understood the challenges I faced. Ironically, at a time when I was withdrawing from social interactions due to the overwhelming noise around me, I met deaf friends who provided me with a sense of comfort. The ability to communicate freely using Indonesian Sign Language without the constant barrage of auditory stimuli allowed me to express myself fully.
My deaf friends demonstrated to me the power of nonverbal communication and connection. They helped me realize that it was possible to build strong friendships and overcome my social anxiety. Their warm smiles, expressive sign language, and empathetic gazes served as a source of strength for me.
Through my interactions with them, I gained a deeper understanding of myself and accepted my shortcomings, which had previously led me astray. They helped me perceive the world in a new light, filled with beauty and tranquility. Their unwavering support was a healing balm for my wounded soul.

Through my friendship with the Kupang Deaf Community, I rediscovered self-confidence and hope for the future. I learned to appreciate the power of nonverbal communication and the importance of building connections with others. This experience taught me that while we face different challenges, we all share the same need to be accepted, loved, and understood. The Kupang Deaf Community has become a second family to me, and I am grateful for their role in my recovery and for the nightly companionship that helped me through life's questions.
In 2021, I became a Sign Language Interpreter due to my daily interactions with Deaf friends, which enabled me to communicate using Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO). I was subsequently appointed as one of the JBI by the Kupang Deaf Community. In 2022, I decided to become a Deaf Ally and support Deaf individuals in NTT using my skills and knowledge.

This experience underscores the significance of community in mental health recovery. It highlights the transformative power of belonging to a group that understands and validates one's experiences. For those facing similar challenges, remember: you are not alone. Seek out connections that can illuminate your path and empower you to heal.
