LISTEN WITH YOUR EYES, SPEAK WITH YOUR HANDS (INDONESIAN SIGN LANGUAGE)
WILLY JHON ANTONIO ANAKAY
Multiple Disabilities are persons with disabilities who have more than one or more types of disabilities, such as deaf-speech impaired disabilities and also deaf-blind disabilities. Of the many types of disabilities, these two disabilities are the most difficult to fulfill in Indonesia. Difficulties in finding work, difficulties in obtaining proper education, and difficulties in social life. This can be seen from the very small number of people with hearing impairments in the world of work and also from the education system in Indonesia also especially in Special Schools where teachers provide the lessons to deaf friends using verbal communication. This has been done for a long time so that one of the problems of deaf friends in Indonesia is the lack of language vocabulary caused by this teaching method. This was expressed directly from students who attended special school or who had completed their education at the school, they had difficulty understanding every lesson given by their teachers because they did not use sign language, which is the language of communication they use. Sign language in Indonesia is known as Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO) while the system implemented in schools is the Indonesian Sign Language System (SIBI). The difference between the two lies in the use of hands in gesturing, in which BISINDO uses two hands while SIBI only uses one hand. There are other significant differences, where BISINDO is a language created by the Deaf community itself and is easier for them to understand, while SIBI is a sign that has a sentence with an SPOK pattern is a sentence that consists of four elements, which is one subject, one predicate, and can also be equipped with an object and description and has an Indonesian language system so that it becomes one of the difficulties for Deaf friends.
The importance of using sign language in communication is because if we use verbal communication, there will be miss understanding in the pronunciation of the language itself for Deaf friends because there are several articulations of words that have similarities, making it difficult for Deaf friends when they do not use sign language. Finally, one solution is to use sign language in communicating or giving subject matter to Deaf friends, which is one of the ways they need to get information and lessons at school. Also, it is important to separate the class for Deaf friends so the teacher can focus on teaching with sign language and it will be vice versa for Deaf students because this is what they need to gain information and lessons. Sign language is when you listen with your eyes and speak with your hands.
